work in progress

This is what I've been busy with recently, doing up my portfolio for art school. Trying my hands on papercut for the first time, my hands are dying from all the slicing as the material is really hard paper card. Planning to do an entire series of papercuts, to create a fusion between art and fashion, so yep excited to complete this project.

Another project is a photoshoot inspired by the title 'Change', have a rough concept and got the materials for the shoot, but have not thought of the exact composition and stuff. So yep, I'll be busy busy with all the university jargon till the end of the month~

inspiration fridays: best of vogue

Every artist has their own inspiration, ideas can't just pop out from nowhere right (actually, sometimes they do). Inspiration can come from looking at nature, flipping through magazines and books, taking a dump in the toilet, really, anything can be inspiration. But one of the best way to get inspiration though, is to reference the works of other people; learn from it, consume it, and produce something of your own; something better, something improved, something different.

For this post we shall look into fashion photography, and specifically, editorials from Vogue. Vogue is a fashion magazine read by women (and men) all over the world, and they have since published many different editions ranging from Vogue Italia to Teen Vogue. Here are some of my favourites (in chronological order)...

Full Contrast
Vogue Paris, March 2013
Photographed by David Sims

Loving the simplicity and strength in this editorial featuring Isabeli Fontana, the bold black lines and form of the clothes in contrast with the stark white background, the soft feminine features in contrast with sharp masculine cheekbones, so much contrast (really apt title) in these editorials to create this edgy and androgynous set of photographs.

The Vogue 120
Vogue, September 2012
Photographed by Norman Jean Roy

Here we see Florence Welch from Florence + the Machine (love their songs~) being featured in The Vogue 120, which celebrates the most stylish singers, designers, actors and models of the moment. Florence is wearing a Chanel dress, Dolce & Gabbana cape and boots, and a Gypsy necklace atop a sleek black mare. Love the ornate and Elizabethan feel of this photo, dayum I need a horse~

A Point of View
Vogue Italia, September 2011
Photographed by Steven Klein

Crazy point of view here, these photographs are shot as if the floor is merely a transparent sheet of glass (maybe it actually is) and the photographer shot everything from under the models. Kudos to up-skirting done professionally; no wardrobe malfunction, no extra articles of clothing playing peekaboo. Also love the colour, tones and the whole macabre feel to it~

 Mechanical Dolls
Vogue Italia, October 2011
Photographed by Tim Walker

A fusion of European and Japanese dressing, this editorial has crazy cool makeup, costumes and props. Love how the backdrop and setting adds on the very surreal and creepy feel to the shoot, as if we are peering through the windows of a dollhouse.

Follow That Woman
Vogue Nippon, September 2009
Photographed by Mikael Jansson

Talk about the objectification of men, the female gaze, female empowerment, yep the title sums it all. Kudos to the editorial team for reversing social norms where women used to be the object of sexual desire, now we see suave beefy men lying stark naked while the leading lady is all decked in high fashion pieces of clothing (lest for one photo where the pages are plastered with her naked torso, bare breast and all). I think the temperature just went up...

Tales of the Unexpected
Vogue UK, December 2008
Photographed by Tim Walker

Another shoot done by Tim Walker! I'm pretty sure Roald Dahl isn't a stranger for most, author of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'James and the Giant Peach', 'The Twits' among many others. Vogue UK enlisted the help of Tim Burton and other actors to bring to life these whimsical stories of Dahl's through fashion. Great use of set, props and costumes here to create these larger-than-life characters and stories.

L.A. Portfolio
L'Uomo Vogue, December 2006
Photographed by Steven Klein

Another shoot by Steven Klein featured here, hmm all these repeats of photographers say something...I have no idea what...but yah. Anyway, L'Uomo Vogue is the male edition of Vogue in Italy, like how France's edition is Vogue Homme. Photographed here is the amazing Chad White, a really famous male model, dang if only I was as good looking.

Alice in Wonderland
Vogue, December 2003
Photographed by Annie Leibovitz

The classic children story of Alice in Wonderland being portrayed by model Natalia Vodianova decked in designer clothes is just purely ingenious. Indeed there are many editorials where fairytales are transformed into high fashion spreads, likewise, the classic Alice is now dressed up by the world's most influential designers, including John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier. Seriously, so many designer clothings in one editorial is kick ass enough.

By now, I guess we can tell my artistic style, edginess, macabre, eccentricity, sultry, sexual tension, theatrics, high fashion, all rolled into one. Hopefully one day, I'll be able to create works of art as powerful as these. Oh and if you did not realise by now, I ditched the all lower caps practice, and I'm typing like a normal person again!

I have two photoshoots planned, mainly for my art portfolio, but still I can't wait to finish it and post it up here, hopefully it'll turn out great! I need a female model for one of the shoots though, if you think you're up for it (do keep in mind my artistic style as shown above haha), please contact me~

curtain call

saturday night ended my 7 years theatre experience, i doubt i'll be doing anything theatre related for a long long time. nightfall was a really amazing experience for me, it was kind of a culmination of my whole theatre experience, what with directing and acting at the same time, as well as conceptualizing and painting the sets, helping choose the costumes and stuff, yea it was really a nice closure for me, especially since i was working with such an amazing and talented team of people.

was stalking myself on facebook, and realized how much i've grown as a person and as a thespian, i shall share some of my memories with you (feel free to mock me and laugh at my grossness).

nightfall, 2013

more (singapore youth festival), 2012

everyone wants to be perfect, 2012

storyline, 2012

and then there were none, 2011

doctor, doctor, 2011

merely freaks, 2010

le prix a paradis, 2007

i know the things i've done do not amount to anything at all, they are merely amateur school productions, but i'm still really grateful for these experiences because they have, in one way or another, molded me to become who i am today.

oh oh on a side note, nightfall has been reviewed by a local theatre critic website just watch lah, you can check out the review here. the play received quite a good review and i was mentioned in the review as well, thank you so much to the reviewer at just watch lah!

now that my mind is off the play, i shall get back to photographing again, whilst in the midst of preparing for university applications as well as army~

kiss on the lips

had an amazing photoshoot with a great team, it was kind of a cool experience working with a photoshoot team for the first time, with make up artists and model. wanted to do a studio kind of editorial shoot, but i didn't have studio lighting on hand, so had to make do with theatre lighting which is way too strong - new lesson learnt. but i really like how the photos turned out, photoshop does wonders! this make up editorial first started when dyon (check out his fashion blog nobilii) showed me some pictures of crazy lip make up and hence we decided to try out these make up on our own, not on our own faces of course, and hence the production of these editorial shoots. there would be more collaborations with nobilii coming soon, check out his blog for more photos i shot.

oh oh, and i just received news that my photo, freefall, is chosen to be exhibited at pop up noise singapore. albeit it being a small-scaled exhibition and only one of my photos is chosen, but it's still a really great opportunity! so if you feel artsy fartsy next week, do head down to star vista mall anytime from 1st to 10th march to look at all the amazing artworks :)

nightfall

i know i haven't really been updating this blog, and my camera has been collecting dust in some obscured corner of my room, but i've been really busy with the theatre production: nightfall. i'm directing the play as well as acting in it, and all of us have been working really hard to make this play a success, what with late night rehearsals after rushing down from work every single day.

i started acting and being involved in theatre at the age of thirteen, and since then i've acted in numerous plays and directed a handful. they are all just school productions, so yea nothing major. i really like the stage though, through acting i can express vent up emotions and anger (which explains why most of the plays i direct are creepy/angsty/macabre), and i really enjoy the magic which theatre is able to create. most importantly i love working with my team, no matter how much torment and torture we have to go through and endure, every single team is brought together with the love of theatre and in the hope of creating a magical piece for the audience to enjoy. trust me, the stage is a magical place, for actors, directors, crew, and the audience.

"nightfall is a collection of four of edgar allan poe's most famous works- with a twist. a true master of horror, poe's notoriously haunting characters will come to life alongside him on stage as he takes us from one story to the next."

so please come supoport the play, do check out our facebook page for more information.

and watch this space soon, i would be uploading a make up editorial spread i shot yesterday, so yea be ready for luscious lips adorning your computer/phone screens.

je t'aime

love me in spite of my flaws, my imperfections;

happy valentines and lunar new year to everyone out there, this is the season for love and for appreciation. love your family, your friends; accept one another for who we are, regardless of race, age, gender, sexuality, religion, beliefs. love is selfless, love transcends all boundaries, love has no limit. there's an innate beauty in everyone: beauty in the veins running through our arms, beauty in the slight crevice between our parted lips. beauty is everywhere as long as you learn to appreciate and to love. love someone because of their character, their flaws, their differences. but most importantly, learn to love yourself. as a quote from a beautiful movie/novel goes, "we accept the love we think we deserve"...

i need to learn how to love.

guide: photography 101

so, many people have been asking me how i take my photographs, whether i have someone clicking it for me or if i have a secret clone of myself locked up in my cupboard. the typical photos which i have posted are called self-portraits. like how a typical self-portrait is a painting of the artist himself, self-portraiture photography is where the photographer is the subject matter of the photo. there are actually many types of photography out there, i hence decided to make use of this post to do up a short guide on them.

self-portraits

as mentioned, self-portraits are photos where both the photographer and the subject matter are the same person. most people have a wireless remote to trigger the camera to start shooting while they are standing in front of the camera. but what i do is to set my camera on timer mode (10 seconds) and then get into position while the beeping of the camera goes off. the camera is also set to burst frames so that it can capture up to 10 shots in one single taking. so yeap, most of my photos are composed in a mere 10 seconds.

if you were to witness one of my self-portrait photoshoots, you might think that i am mentally unstable or possessed. the levitation set i did was a challege for me because i had to climb up a ladder in 5 seconds, adjust myself in 3 seconds, and hold the position for another few more seconds. i really need a remote control haha.

these self portraits are often termed as fine art photography, because most of the time the concept and composition is key rather than the model themselves, therefore some fine art photographers also hire the help of their friends and family members for fine art photoshoots.

one of my favourite and respected self-portrait photographer is alex stoddard, he is an amazing photographer and has been shooting since young. he is merely 19 or thereabouts and he is able to create such wonderful art pieces that are emotional and breathtaking, and transcend all boundaries of time, nationalities and age. he really inspired myself as well as many teen photographers out there to create art with our cameras.

a much more famous photographer who does self-portraits would be cindy sherman, whose photographs dabble on the issues of feminism and female rights/stereotypes.

portraiture

this is the most common kind of photography and the most personal one too, think family portraits, graduation photos, model test shoots, and your passport photo. these are some examples of portraiture which is shot in a photo studio with neutral lighting.

these shoots are normally, for the lack of a better word, boring. the focus of such photos is the subject's face, and sometimes props and backdrops can be used to provide a context for the photo. never, and i really mean never, confuse these shoots for high fashion editorials. model portraits are used for casting purposes and not to be blown up on billboards or to be printed on the front page of a fashion magazine.

fashion editorials

flip through the pages of vogue, elle, harper's bazaar and you'll see high fashion spreads, with models in haute couture contorting their bodies to accentuate the structure of the clothes. these are fashion editorials, which are very different from commercial shoots, which i will be touching on later.

fashion editorials aim to sell clothes and to photograph these designer clothes in the best light, with the model merely serving as a tool to bring out the aesthetics of the clothes. usually fashion editorials follow a theme or tell a story and are done in a spread, with one model (or maybe more) carrying through the shoot decked in different outfits. these shoots can be done in a studio setting or done outdoors. both studio shoots and outdoor shoots have their perks. you would have full control of the settings in an indoor shoot, be it in terms of lighting, weather, etcetera while an outdoor shoot is able to spark interest for the audience in terms of interesting backdrops and scenes.

but most importantly, the clothes wear the person.

commercial shoots

fashion editorials cater to high fashion and haute couture while commercial fashion cater more to selling products ranging from beauty products to cat food or even toilet paper.

think covergirl or silkygirl with models pouting their thick luscious lips or batting their cat eyes in an attempt to promote the different products. these shoots are normally done in studio settings to bring focus to the products rather than the atmosphere of the photos.

wedding shoots

most people would have a chance to be involved in a photoshoot once (sometimes more) in their lifetime and pretend that they're models. haha but yah wedding photography can range from indoor studio shoots to outdoor shoots in the maldives or the savannah.

most importantly wedding photographers aim to capture the love between the couple and to create fond memories which the couple can look back upon. unlike fashion which are mostly posed pictures where the models are directed to sell products, the only product being 'sold' in wedding photography is love, hence more candid and natural shots.

street photography

it is a genre of photography that feature subjects in candid situations within public places such as malls, park, streets, beaches, political conventions and maybe toilets (i mean it is a public place, and one's expression can be quite candid if you see a camera lens hovering above your toilet cubicle).

street photography captures human moments, caught at a poignant and decisive point in time. it is very true to life, photographing the different walks of life and in turn capturing the culture of a society in a single frame.

events coverage

if you have an important event which you need someone to record it all down, hire a photographer to do an event coverage. i feel that paparazzis fall into this category too, they cover runway walks and red carpets, and of course the lives of the celebrities. i mean life in itself is a great deal of an event.

travel/nature photography

when going on a holiday or backpacking trip, these photographers are not your usual snap-and-go tourists. each photograph is carefully and creatively composed. these photographers document the beauty of the different landscapes, the flora and fauna, and simply collecting the wonders of the world in their huge storage of photographs in their hard disk or sd cards.

ok, this is an unsually long post for me. we all learn new things everyday and i hope this post has provided some insights for everyone in terms of photography, although the list is not entirely exhaustive. it's the lunar new year tomorrow and i hope everyone celebrating it would receive lots of angpaos and strut around in your new clothes. happy lunar new year everyone!
